Potential Careers for Science Majors

October 25, 2018, Posted In Grad Admissions

Are you a life sciences major and not sure what to do after graduation? You don’t have to end up in a white lab coat staring at petri dishes all day – unless you want to! There are tons of other options for future careers as well.

Getting a graduate degree can open many new doors for you. Here are some ideas of how to take your science degree and forge a successful and satisfying career.

  • Patent Law. Going to law school with your science background can lend itself to a fulfilling (and even lucrative) career. Patent law is hot right now, because the biotech world (think pharmaceuticals and medical robotics, for example) is making strides with cutting-edge technology. Knowing about science will help you understand the products and technologies that are being submitted for patents.
  • Biostatistics. Biostatistics is the combination of using math and biology to study trends in disease, environmental impact on human health, efficacy of pharmaceuticals and more. Data analytics is experiencing massive job growth, and biostatisticians fall into that category. Think about getting a masters degree in statistics.
  • Science Writing. If writing is your strength, becoming a science writer may be just what you are looking for. Science writers perform research and compose and edit scientific news, articles and features in business, trade, professional or technical journals. One can also secure a job as a science writer for blogging and social media communications, or at a higher education institution. There are many programs to train science writers, from master’s degrees to certificate programs that only require a handful of classes.
  • Teaching. Teaching science in K – 12 is an incredible opportunity to help mold the minds of our future leaders. Get a teaching credential to teach elementary, junior high or high school students. Or better still, continue your studies in a graduate school of education.

In fact, there are countless ways you can apply your science degree to an exciting career path. If you are exploring your options after college, contact us for a free 30-minute consultation!
