College interviews 101

The college interview is one of the few vehicles that you have (other than your essay) to showcase who you are beyond raw numbers. While the interview is not considered an essential part of your application, it can definitely put your application in a better light if it goes well.

A few tips to remember during the college interview:

  • Do not be late
  • Make eye contact
  • Ask good questions (“Where is Boston University located again?” is not considered a good question)
  • Don’t be shy about expressing your enthusiasm for the school
  • Always send the interviewer a thank you note
  • Remember to talk during the interview! It’s important to be conversational and not just answer questions with the words “yes” or “no.” The interviewer wants to know that you are genuinely interested in attending the college – so even if a particular school is not necessarily your first choice, don’t make that obvious.

Asking questions and explaining why you want to attend are good ways of demonstrating enthusiasm. Just don’t come to the interview dressed up as the school’s mascot.
