NYU’s 2020 writing supplement explained

While NYU does not have a formal writing supplement, there is a section where you can expand upon your interest in the university. This is a required response.

We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. What motivated you to apply to NYU? Why have you applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please also tell us why you are interested in these additional areas of study or campuses. We want to understand – Why NYU? (400 word maximum)

Answering the question “Why NYU?” should be viewed as the culmination of your demonstrated interest and a reflection of your “fit” on campus. Universities are constantly trying to assess fit in the same way their applicants are. As such, be sure to craft a thoughtful and honest response here. If NYU is your absolute top choice, then this answer should come easily. If you find yourself struggling to answer the question, then it might be time to reevaluate things. Be as specific as possible when responding. Making broad generalizations about ranking, location and/or strength of programs will not get you very far! NYU already knows all these things! What will you bring to campus that they don’t know about?
