What is a college fair?
College fairs are an excellent way to get face time with admissions officers from colleges across the country – all without having to actually travel to campus. You can get your questions answered, receive additional information on the college and demonstrate your interest to admissions officers.
What should I do before a college fair?
You need to go to college fairs prepared. Look at the colleges that will be attending the fair and make a list of the ones you are interested in. Before talking to admissions representatives, do some research on the schools by visiting their websites. Read up on relevant information (majors, campus life, student clubs, etc.). Remember that when you’re interacting with an admissions officer, the questions you ask are a representation of how prepared, focused and mature you are.
Guidelines for asking questions
Make sure your questions are direct. Do not ask vague questions like, “Tell me about your school” or questions that can be easily answered by looking on the school’s website like, “How many students attend your college?” Instead, ask questions that are more opinion-based, like “What’s your favorite thing about working at your college?” or “What makes your college unique?” Many admissions officers are alumni of the colleges that they now represent; if so, ask them about their past experience as students.
Etiquette
You should always be polite, make eye contact, smile and show your interest! Ask for the admissions officer’s business card or contact information so that you can follow up with a short thank you note, reaffirming your interest in the college. Keep it short, simple and provide a piece of information that reminds them of who you are.
Next steps
Now that you have an idea of how to prepare, start researching college fairs in your area. Most are typically held in the summer or fall. Mark your calendar – and start getting ready.
