MBA programs are one of the most popular graduate degrees. An MBA does not only boost your skill set in business administration, but it is also an effective degree for career advancement. If you plan on pursuing an MBA, you’re likely already employed so the option of a full-time or part-time program is a question to consider. Let’s consider the pros and cons of the part-time MBA.
Pros
• Time flexibility – You can keep working while pursuing your MBA because classes take place in the evening or on weekends. The part-time MBA is structured to accommodate working professionals.
• Less financial concern – Since you can continue working while in school, you can reduce the financial stress. Some employers will also contribute to education expenses.
• Continue building your professional experience – You can gain credits and a degree without having to interrupt your career path. And you’ll end up with more years of work experience on your résumé in the end.
• Hands-on practice – You can apply what you learn in class to your daily work and you can bring daily work experiences into the classroom. This way you not only make the most out of classroom learning, but also improve your effectiveness at work.
Cons
• Limited programs – Not every school offers a part-time MBA so you may have a more limited list of programs to choose from. Also, depending on the location of the school you select, there might be a strain from commuting.
• Greater time commitment – With fewer hours for class per week, a part-time MBA must extend over a longer period of time. Some students take several years to finish the degree.
• Limited course selection – Limited class meeting times may restrict the course offerings you’re able to choose from. Instead of choosing from several courses offered during the regular semester, you may only be able to choose from among one or two courses per semester.
• Limited career opportunities – Cohort and network building opportunities are much more challenging and limited than in full-time programs.
While there are some clear advantages to a part-time MBA, the disadvantages may affect your career, academic performance and personal life. Before starting your applications, carefully decide which degree is right for you by considering your career goals and lifestyle.
